If you watch my YouTube channel, you know that I absolutely LOVE this time of year. I love the cooler months of the year. Spending more time at home has never been a problem for me. I love to cozy up and watch movies, play games, and read books. I get that some people may find the cooler months boring or even depressing. I hope this article can help alleviate some of the boredom and bring some joy to your life by keeping you entertained. No matter what your budget is, you can have fun. Let’s look at some free ways to stay entertained at home.
Watch Free TV & Movies
One of the best things Tony and I did for our finances was to get rid of satellite TV. We were paying over $100 a month and only watching a couple channels. We, honestly, watch YouTube 99% of the time. And getting rid of satellite led to me starting my YouTube channel. There is so much you can watch for free online. If you have a Roku or Roku TV, the Roku Channel has free TV shows and movies. Pluto is another place to watch a lot of free TV. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you’re already getting tons of free movies. Many of the major networks also put their latest episodes on their websites and apps. You’ll also want to download the Peacock app to your smart TV as it has so many great shows and movies you can watch for free.
Play Free Video Games
I’ve been playing video games for as long as I can remember. My first system was the NES and I spent hours playing Super Mario Bros, Tetris, Duck Hunt, and other classics from that era. But what if you want to play games for free? Plays.org is a place I would definitely recommend. The site has a variety of games. Whether you love puzzle, action, word, or strategy games, you’ll find something fun. The site also offers some of your favorite characters. While I was all about the running and jumping games in my youth, I now love to play word games. One I had to try was Zombie Typing.
It’s a practice game for kids, but I gotta admit that it will get your fingers moving. The premise of the game is to type the words correctly and each zombie has a different word. As you type the word correctly, your character fires off a bullet and kills the zombie. As the game goes along, the zombies start coming faster and faster. If you mess up a word, the zombies will get closer and closer until they reach your character. I made it to Wave 11 before getting killed. I also enjoyed the game Wording, which gives you a bunch of letters and you make words.
Currently, many of the word games are for kids, but the site is always adding new games. If you’re looking for something for you or the kids to do this winter, check this site out.
Cook & Bake with What’s on Hand
There are so many great recipes online. There are even sites where you can enter the ingredients you have on hand and get recipe ideas. For example, if you’ve got sugar, milk, vanilla, and peanut butter on hand, you’ve got the ingredients for peanut butter fudge. If you’ve got eggs, use the sugar, peanut butter, and eggs to make super simple peanut butter cookies. One site to check out is MyFridgeFood which lets you check off the ingredients you have. Another is RecipeLand that has a section called Recipes by Ingredients.
Break Out the Craft Supplies
Of course, what would fall and winter be without crafts? Raid your craft supplies and see what you have on hand. Also work to reuse items you have on hand. Upcycling is not only free, but wonderful for the environment. You can also get creative and use your leftover craft scraps to make something. If you need ideas, Pinterest is one of my favorite places to find inspiration.
Read a Free Book
Last, but not least, you can’t go wrong with a good book. Thanks to sites like Amazon, you can download literally thousands of free books. You don’t even have to have a membership. Authors often run free promotions on their books. Just head on over to Amazon and go to the Kindle section. And, no, you do not need to have a Kindle. You can download the Kindle app onto your laptop or smartphone for free. Over the past decade, I’ve downloaded 7500 free books. Whether you love horror, romance, or non-fiction, you can find something to read for free.
You don’t have to be bored and you certainly don’t have to spend money to have fun. There are so many great things you can do for free. Whether you love to read or play video games or watch TV, you can stay entertained for free.
