How to Save Money on Appliances

Sharing is caring!

Whether you’re buying a new home or just want to upgrade your old appliances, you may be tempted to rush out and buy the first pretty stove or fridge that catches your eye. This is a big mistake. Not only will this cost you a lot money, but you could end up with a dud. Remember, looks aren’t everything. There are some things you need to consider. Let’s take a closer look at how to save money on appliances.

7 Ways to Save Money on Appliances

Think About the Features You Really Need

First things first. For each appliance you’re looking to purchase, think about the features you need. For example, you may want an ice maker, but do you really need a TV screen in your refrigerator? Large appliances now come with so many different features that it can be overwhelming. Make a list of what you’re looking for in each appliance so that you don’t get suckered into a purchase you later regret.

Set a Budget

Now that you know what you want from your appliances, you need to set a realistic budget. Not only does it need to be realistic for the amount of appliances you need to purchase, but for what you can actually afford. Set an overall budget for all the appliances you want to buy and then set a rough estimate for each appliance. You may go over on some purchases, but but under on others. As long as you don’t exceed your overall budget, you’re good to go.

Read Reviews

Nothing is worse that buying an appliance and then discovering that it’s a piece of crap. Take the time to read as many reviews as you can. Companies like Lowes and Home Depot have review sections on each of their products. Read the 5-star reviews as well as the 1-star reviews to get an idea of whether or not it’s a good purchase. Also pay close attention to how long the person has actually had the appliance. If someone just purchased the appliance, it may work beautifully, but 5 months down the road, it may start having issues.

Consider Buying Used

Don’t be afraid to purchase used appliances. Some people update their appliances every couple of years. This means you can find appliances in really good condition for a fraction of what you would pay for new. Obviously, you want to clean the appliance really well before using. You also want to test it before handing over your cold hard cash.

Look for the Scratch and Dent Clearance Section

In stores like Lowes, Sears, and Home Depot, you can find sections that include scratch and dent appliances that are on clearance. This can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars. It’s not uncommon to find an awesome refrigerator on clearance because it has a scratch on the side. That scratch, which can be covered with a magnet or your child’s artwork, can save you hundreds of dollars. There’s only one thing to keep in mind. If the store is currently having a sale, the new, unscratched model may be cheaper. If so, haggle on the scratched one to get it even cheaper.

Keep Your Eyes Open for Great Sales

Home improvement stores are always having sales on appliances. It might be 20% off or buy an appliance and get a $500 rebate. Sometimes you can find sales that reduce the cost of an appliance by hundreds to thousands of dollars. If you simply have to have a fridge with a built-in TV screen, wait until there’s a really good sale. You can usually find amazing deals at the end of the year as stores scramble to get rid of the “old” models and make room for the new.

Last, but not least, if you want to purchase new appliances, bundle them. The more appliances you’re willing to bundle together, the more of a discount stores are willing to give. All you have to do is ask. Believe it or not, you can haggle in stores like Lowes and Home Depot. Sometimes they even have bundle discount sales going on. Don’t be afraid to haggle your way to a good deal.
